As a member of the Young Lawyers Section, Louisiana State Bar Association, he served as State Chairman, as 7th Congressional District Delegate, and was the recipient of the Outstanding Young Lawyer's Award in 1975.

He is actively involved in the Louisiana State Bar Association, having served on numerous committees and as a former House of Delegates member.

Other legal organization memberships include: American Bar Association, 15th Judicial District (past President), Vermilion Parish Bar Association (past President) Louisiana State Law Institute, Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association, Defense Research Institute and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

Active in civic, political and legal organizations, Sonnier is also known as a raconteur and is frequently called upon to serve as a master of ceremonies or public speaker.

He served as President of Abbeville Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club and he currently is Vice President of the Board of Trustees of the University of Southwestern Louisiana Foundation.

An avid sportsman, Sonnier is a past President of Louisiana Ducks Unlimited and for many years has served as a National Trustee and Ducks Unlimited Regional Vice President for the Southwest Mississippi Flyaway.

Sonnier received his Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and his law degree from Tulane Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1963.

He specializes in trial litigation involving personal injury and insurance defense as a well as probate law. During his practice, Sonnier has been involved in two cases which were argued before the U. S. Supreme Court.

Admitted to practice in all state courts, federal courts in Louisiana, U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U. S. Supreme Court.
